The Center’s mission is to accelerate the responsible deployment of AI-augmented decision support systems, ensuring high-quality healthcare is accessible to all populations.
Integrating AI into health systems is a fundamental ‘last mile’ challenge. NSF AHeAD addresses this through interdisciplinary research spanning AI/ML, data science and systems engineering, evaluation and implementation science, human-computer interaction, and clinical and public health—while training the next-generation workforce in AI/ML and healthcare.
The centers efforts will ultimately accelerate AI’s transition from small-scale studies to real-world deployment—and ultimately to population-scale health impact.
NSF IUCRC – A Collaborative Model
In July 2025, NSF AHeAD received a planning grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to establish an Industry University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC).
The IUCRC program generates breakthrough research by enabling close and sustained engagement between industry innovators, world-class academic teams, and government agencies. The program offers an excellent collaborative framework structured to accelerate research and innovation that benefits broad industry.
Utilizing the IUCRC program, the NSF AHeAD Center brings together researchers and students from four universities: the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Tulane University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Florida. We are also excited to share that Tampere University in Finland has expressed interest in joining the Center after its establishment. This collaborative effort will combine the collective knowledge and direction of industry members to generate shared value.
